Million Americans Expected to Cruise in 2025
Anticipated Record-Breaking Cruise Passenger Numbers for the Third Year in a Row
WASHINGTON, DC (January 27, 2025) – According to AAA, a projected 19 million Americans will embark on ocean cruises this year, reflecting a 4.5% increase over 2024, when 18.2 million enjoyed cruise vacations. This marks the third consecutive year of record-breaking cruise passenger volumes. The cruise industry has seen a stronger post-pandemic resurgence compared to other travel segments, with cruise demand growth outpacing hotel demand growth for the past two years.
"The cruise industry's recovery is nothing short of extraordinary, yet not unexpected," says Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. "First-time cruisers often become repeat customers because cruise vacations cater to all ages. With most expenses covered upfront, travelers can focus on having fun and creating cherished memories with loved ones."
A Remarkable Rebound
The cruise industry, hit hard by the 2020 pandemic, has experienced a significant comeback. In 2022, cruise volumes recovered to 84% of 2019 levels, then surged to a new high in 2023, nearly 20% above the pre-pandemic baseline. The growth trend continues, with 2025 expected to surpass 2019 by 34%.
Chasing Sunshine
Most Americans cruising this year are in search of sun-soaked destinations! 72% of U.S. cruise passengers are heading to the Caribbean, making it the most popular destination. Alaska attracts 6% of cruisers, while the Mediterranean accounts for 5%. The Caribbean's dominance reflects pre-pandemic trends from 2018 and 2019. Shorter Caribbean cruises are gaining popularity, with 18% of itineraries now 2 to 5 days, compared to just 2% in 2023.
Florida hosts the world's busiest cruise ports: Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale. Miami welcomed Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas last year, the world's largest cruise ship, and this summer, Port Canaveral will host its sister ship, Star of the Seas.
Cruise Prep: Tips and Tricks
Booked a cruise? Here are AAA Travel's expert tips for smooth sailing:
Reserve Activities Early: Secure your spot for excursions, specialty dinners, or spa treatments ahead of time. Popular activities fill up fast! Also, consider travel insurance for added peace of mind.
Arrive Early: If flying to your port city, arrive a day or two before departure. This mitigates stress from potential flight delays and allows you to explore your departure city. AAA travel agents can assist with booking your flight through the cruise line, offering convenience and support during travel disruptions.
Parking Plans: If driving, plan where to park in advance. Terminal parking can be pricey, so look for off-site options with shuttle services or hotels offering “park & cruise” packages.
Use the Cruise Line’s App: Check in, review itineraries, complete mandatory drills, and access various services through the app without needing the ship’s internet package.
Packing Essentials: Review the cruise line’s prohibited items list before packing. Bring essentials like sunscreen, extra prescription medications, magnetic hooks for extra storage, and colorful beach towel clips for easy identification on the pool deck.
Embarkation Do’s and Don’ts: Arrive at your assigned time and keep your passport or birth certificate on hand. Pack a small carry-on with a swimsuit to start the fun immediately upon boarding.
Future Bookings: Enjoying your cruise? Visit the future cruise office onboard for special promotions and to book your next trip early to avoid last-minute rushes.
